Vila Sol Golf Course
The Algarve boasts one of the highest numbers of golf holes per square kilometre in the world and some of the most beautiful courses in the world, too. Vila Sol is one of them. The award-winning Vila Sol golf course has 27 holes. The original 18-hole championship course dates from 1991. Vila Sol was selected to host the Portuguese Open in 1992 and 1993. Nine new holes were opened two years ago in 2000. Golf course designer Donald Steel, who has made more than 50 courses to his name throughout the world, has made Vila Sol a challenging course. His expert use of large numbers of different species of trees and fast, sloping greens, constructed in accordance with the rules of the USGA, have produced a course which inexperienced golfers will find tough.
